Refugees require a lot of support from the government and local community when they arrive in Australia as they learn the English language, find affordable housing, settle children into school, find employment, and learn local social and cultural norms. Government-funded settlement programs play an important role in helping refugees integrate in the community in which they settle. Other countries (Canada, UK, US, NZ and Ireland) have shown that community settlement leads to better integration outcomes for refugees (e.g., social connections, learning English, and finding a job). The Australian Government has decided to trial a new community refugee sponsorship program, called CRISP, which commenced in mid-2022. The CRISP program will train community groups to provide settlement support to refugee visa holders for the first 12 months after they arrive in Australia. The study

The Department of Home Affairs have chosen The University of Queensland (UQ) working with the Australian Institute for Family Studies (AIFS) to evaluate the effectiveness of community settlement in achieving strong integration outcomes for refugees, compared to other humanitarian entrants receiving services through the existing government-funded Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP).

Taking part in the study

Researchers will be talking to refugees about their experience of settling in Australia and the support they received. Researchers will also be talking to community supporters about their experiences of providing support to refugees. To learn more about taking part in the study, download the information sheet relevant to you or listen to the audio narration supplied.
