Congratulations to Ella Kuskoff, the winner of the 2020 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event held at ISSR last week.
The Road to Inequality is Paved with Good Policy Intentions’, highlights how policies with positive intentions can falter in design and implementation. Specifically, she examines how the Queensland Government’s domestic and family violence policies, which aim to change attitudes and behaviours, actually reinforce gendered assumptions and inequalities.
“Good intentions are not enough to pave the way for gender equity,” she said. “Policies need to be doing much more to consciously question and challenge the problematic cultural and structural conditions that continue to underpin gender inequality.”
This is the 13th year of 3MT at UQ and, due to COVID-19 and social distancing measures, is being held in a virtual format via video submission. Ella’s submission was played and judged at a small event at ISSR and, as the heat winner, she will now progress to UQ’s Humanities and Social Sciences virtual faculty final on August 5.
The winners of faculty finals then progress to the UQ final. UQ also hosts the Asia-Pacific 3MT finals. Presenting in the 3MT competition increases students’ capacity to effectively communicate their PhD research in just three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-academic audience. Founded by UQ, 3MT is now held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide.
