Researcher biography

Gayani is working in the social data analytics team led by professor Rhema Vaithiyanathan. Gayani's current work involves researching and developing explainable machine learning models to help decision making with health and administrative data. In one of her projects at ISSR, Gayani explored the usefulness of these methods to identify children at the risk of poor future educational outcomes, who are admitted to paediatric intensive care units in Queensland

Gayani has completed her PhD from Queensland University of Technology recently. During her PhD, Gayani has worked with unsupervised machine learning methods and conducted research on developing effective methods to discover knowledge from social media networks based on user interaction patterns. She received a BSc(Hons) in Computer Engineering degree from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2013. Gayani worked in industry as a Software Engineer prior to her PhD.
