Developing an Effective Homelessness Workforce

The Road to Home (2008) identified the development of a workforce strategy as a central component oh homelessness policy and an integral element of an effective response to homelessness. The aim of this project was to provide a research evidence base for the development of an effective homelessness workforce, focusing on the specialised homelessness services workforce. An essential first step in effective workforce development is to understand the current state of the workforce, and identify the main challenges it currently faces along with those likely to arise in the immediate future. As part of the Homesless Research Partnership Agreement with the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, this project sought to:

1. Collect new data to allow the construction of teh first accurate picture of the specialist homelessness workforce across Australia;

2. Identify the key current and short-term future challenges this workforce faces in meeting needs and policy aims in the homelessness arena;

3. Identify the main approaches to developing an effective workforce strategy for this workforce
